What is depth of field?
Depth of field is the distance between the nearest and farthest objects that appear acceptably sharp in an image. A shallow depth of field isolates a subject with a soft background; a deep depth of field keeps an entire scene sharp.
What affects it?
- Aperture — wider apertures (small f-numbers) reduce depth of field.
- Focal length — longer lenses reduce depth of field at a given distance.
- Subject distance — getting closer reduces depth of field.
- Sensor size — larger sensors reduce depth of field for the same framing.
Hyperfocal distance
Focusing at the hyperfocal distance makes everything from half that distance to infinity acceptably sharp — the classic landscape technique for maximum depth of field.
