What is exposure value?

Exposure value (EV) is a single number that describes how much light a scene has, independent of any one camera setting. EV 15 is roughly full sun — the classic “sunny 16” condition.

Equivalent exposures

The same EV can be reached with many different combinations of aperture, shutter speed and ISO. If you open the aperture one stop, you can halve the shutter speed and keep the same brightness — that trade-off is what the equivalent-exposure list visualizes.
